Certification Process Overview


Application: An application is signed and the certification planning process is initiated.


Pre-Visit: This service is optional and can facilitate the subsequent certification process.


Social Fingerprint Self-Assessment: The registration in SAI Social Fingerprint* platform and completion of the Self-Assessment.


Certification Audit: Two Stage Process


Stage 1 - System readiness review which can identify omissions or opportunities for improvement prior to the Stage 2 audit. Includes also the SAI Social Fingerprint Independent Evaluation.

Stage 2 - Full system assessment to verify conformance of the management system to the requirements of SA8000:2014 and the related Performance Indicator Annex.  Includes also the SAI Social Fingerprint Independent Evaluation.


Upon successful completion of the certification audit, a Certificate of Conformity will be issued for a three-year license period.


Surveillance Audits: Periodic surveillance audits will be conducted to ensure that effective implementation of the management system is being maintained. Includes also the SAI Social Fingerprint Independent Evaluation.


Re-Certification Audit: The certificate is valid for a maximum period of three years and is renewable upon re-certification. Requires a new Social Fingerprint Self-Assessment prior to the audit and an Independent Assessment during the audit.


*The Social Fingerprint is an online tool developed by SAI in order to help organisations and certification bodies to measure and rate social performance, support the certification process and drive continual improvement. It involves a combination between the organisation self-assessment and auditors independent assessment based on the same criteria related to management system.

Revised SAI Guidance on Covid-19

SAI Guidance is re-published in its second edition to assist SA8000 certified organizations impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in protecting the rights of all workers when resuming activities.
Additionally, SAI publishes Policy exceptions document sets some temporary exceptions to the normal SA8000 requirements. Such exceptions are to be applicable during the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to support business continuity for certified organizations and job stability for workers.
